Butcher of Beeviken
To USBee or not to USBee?
After some discussion with classmates and feedback on my other mesh mashups I settled on fine tuning my USBee concept. Most people seemed to enjoy the juxtaposition of the organic bee and the synthetic USB connector but I also got good feedback on the satisfying simplicity of it. You'll see below in the final mesh that I tried to really emphasize that the connector seems unnaturally jammed into the bee's abdomen.

I initially found Meshmixer painful but ended feeling comfortable quite quickly. The sculpting was fun and the selection and separation was tedious but satisfying. It did feel a bit macabre slowing hacking up the bee, especially as I found it quite useful to hide the elements already separated.
Remix Culture
Something that's really stood out to me about remix culture is that in a way society is based off of remix culture, in the sense that the progress of humanity has based on the idea of building upon what came before. From science to art, there is an understanding that we wouldn't be where we are today without the achievements of those that came before.
As a web developer I have always relied heavily on open source code and although I have not contributed directly to any large projects I have always shared my work, such as on Codepen or Github, for people to build upon. Even an institution such as Alberta University of the Arts exists for the sole purpose of passing on knowledge so that we can create something new.
