All the pieces of a black French press laid out on a white table For our upcoming project where we must recreate a physical object, accurate to .01 mm, in Rhino we had to select three potential objects to attempt this feat.

Working with electronics seems like an absolutely nightmare so I wanted to avoid them at all costs but it's 2022 and I'm a nerd so pretty much everything I own is electronic. Honestly, finding a mechanical object was started to feel harder then the project itself would be but I found some. They have a theme.

French Press

It might sound simple at first but I think there's plenty of complexities here to figure out. If a single object isn't complex enough I could maybe do the whole set as a series.

Clever Dripper

Not a lot of parts but a lot of detailed geometry.

Aeropress

Simple, elegant and makes an excellent cup of coffee.

Selection

I think the best item to select would be the French press, it's got several parts and although some are fairly simple the double filters will be fairly intricate to reproduce with CAD. Even things that looks simple like the handle have a subtle curve that will require some figuring out.

I was worried that wouldn't have time but I managed to get it done! Just berry-ly. From Sketch To Models Even with gobos!  To Prints Printed the rook, and a version of it as just a shell in the same spot. On the shell I used PrusaSlicer's Fuzzy Skin feature to give the avocado texture. More Renders I'm actually pretty happy with how they turned out. One big flaw with it at the moment is that it's not possible to distinguish sides right now. If I had more time I think I'd just make some modifications, mostly in textures, to make one side rotten.

French Press Finesse

Reverse Engineering Final Renders After finishing the last few parts of my reverse engineered French press I got started on the final renders. That was a lot of work. Very finicky detailed work. I can't say I particularly enjoyed the process but I'm happy with how it all turned out. The rendering process was quite satisfying and it's made more satisfying by the realism and accuracy of the models. Now please enjoy the following renders I spent so much time on. And now for something I've never done before. A Rhino video animation! It was a bit weird to wrap my head around initially but I figured it out.

Crashing CAD Candy Castle

I really twisted and filleted myself into a corner on this one.  Beware the complex geometry introduced by Twist and FilletEdge Of course using those commands in a reasonable manner shouldn't cause any problems but I used FilletEdge on all the crisscrosses of the wafer, on all the edges of the Oreos and in several other instances. Then, adding several copies of that object to the file when it became too much. Working with the file for the most part was fast but creating more of each version was slower and slower. Saving is a nightmare on this ~4GB file now. Which meant I saved less and on a couple occasions lost quite a bit of work. Inspiration and Research Of course, all that was by far the biggest challenge of the process.
